I was actually pretty impressed with this book, especially at first. The character, Brian, is for sure a witty tw*t as they would say in the book. Sometimes he is so stuck on love and girls that he is oblivious to the rest of the world. But the humor behind it definitely made me smile... A lot! About 2/3 of the way in I definitely was getting bored with the story line and started to do some skimming. Still a great read and a great book I just prefer my books to move a little bit faster.Product details

Starter for Ten (Audible Audio Edition) David Nicholls Dave John Whole Story Audiobooks Books Reviews
Having read, and enjoyed, Nicholl's later book One Day I found this fare rather disappointing. He can write very convincing dialogue, I knew that from the other book, but like so often with this type of coming-of-age novel the male lead character is totally unconvincing.
What teenage girls 'see' in spotty puberal boys is not a new dilemma; it remains baffling. But here we're expected to believe that a gorgeous young woman would find this particularly unattractive specimen a tempting partner. Just a ridiculous concept.
In this way Starter for Ten reminds me of Murakami's Norwegian Wood, that also expects us to suspend our disbelief. That book may well have been better written than this one, but it was also nowhere near as funny.
If you like Starter for Ten, then you'll love One Day.
Brian Jackson is a total nerd heading off to university in England in the mid-1980s. Of course he falls in love with the most unattainable girl in school while pursuing his dream of appearing on the University Challenge quiz show, and just managing to get through every day as it comes.
I liked this book a lot, but didn't love it. David Nicholls is a fantastic writer, and the story is funny and emotional, pulling the reader in right away. While this is a great coming of age tale, I thought much of it was way too predictable, and the main character was just a tad too annoying to keep me rooting for him throughout. Still, it's an engrossing and entertaining read.
I read this because I enjoyed the movie "Starter For Ten" that was based on this novel. The movie was cute but the book is even better.
A young British student, Brian Jackson, is attending university in Bristol and wants to be on the University Challenge team that competes with other teams on TV. He has his own challenges of dealing with roommates, teammates, girls, his mom's new boyfriend, etc. The book has a much better and realistic ending then the movie. A good book about coming of age for teens and adults, even if you didn't attend college
This is a hard book to keep going with, though of course I did. Our protagonist, Brian Jackson, is a piece of work. He relentlessly, seemingly willfully, does and says the wrong thing every single time. No matter the situation. He's not stupid, the early bits of the novel attempt to tell us he's quite smart, achieving a scholarship at university. That's not an easy get, but he's so tone deaf that you forgot his brains pretty quickly.
The plot of the Starter for Ten (the name under which I bought this, I guess it's the movie title rather than the original title of Nicholls' novel) is 19 year old Brian Jackson, off to university, adventures ensuing. To say that he's not ready to be on his own is a gigantic understatement, and watching him mess up his early tasks (roommates, mates from home, school, women) takes up the first half of the story, and the second half really. There's a quiz competition, called University Challenge, that flits in and out of the narrative, but really is just a vehicle for Brian to screw up. There are three women in his new life Alice, his crush, who likes attention....a lot, but is unwilling to be frank with him; Lucy, quiet and smart; Rebecca, who for some reason likes having him around and is almost as socially awkward. To say that Brian mis-reads and mis-handles all three of them isn't spoiling anything.
Still, it's a slice of something, and aside from some family details could have been a middle chapter in the Adrian Mole series, Adrian and Brian are a reasonable amount alike. The novel moved, the supporting characters were interestingly drawn, and it Nicholls didn't dwell when he shouldn't have. Whether you'd like it overall depends on your view of trainwreck protags. If you like them, by all means click "Add to Cart".
I have now read all three of his novels, in reverse order from that in which they were written. The one constant which has been present from the start is an underlying sweetness to his characters, even when they're behaving badly.
Brian Jackson is the goofy kid we all knew (or were) trying to make his way through his first year of college. Despite all his good intentions, and his ill-conceived attempts to become cool (or perhaps because of them), he still manages to offend and anger everyone who cares about him.
Mr. Nicholls makes us alternately laugh and wince as we watch Brian try to overcome his social awkwardness and woo the pretty girl who everyone knows is out of his league. Everyone, that is, except Brian. As painful as it is to watch, you find you just have to know what happens next. And just when you think poor, hapless Brian's situation couldn't possibly get any worse, it does. But he comes through it, hopefully having learned some valuable life lessons along the way.
There isn't anything deep or earth-shattering about this book. It's just a pleasant way to spend a few hours and reminisce about the follies of our own youth. Plus there's the fact that Mr. Nicholls has wonderful taste in music! For nearly every song he mentioned, I mentally cried out, "I love that song!"
I was actually pretty impressed with this book, especially at first. The character, Brian, is for sure a witty tw*t as they would say in the book. Sometimes he is so stuck on love and girls that he is oblivious to the rest of the world. But the humor behind it definitely made me smile... A lot!
